Augusta, Princess of Wales (1719-72)

  • Daughter of Frederick II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, she married Frederick, Prince of Wales (died 1751), elder son of George II
  • Fostered the interest of her eldest son, George III, in architecture with tuition by William Chambers
  • Extended and enhanced the landscaping, building and exotic planting begun by her husband at Kew
  • Commissioned Liotard’s pastel portraits of her nine children
  • Commissioned Knapton to paint a group portrait of herself and children as a memorial to her husband
  • Collected portraits of her family by Francis Cotes and Angelica Kauffmann
